Bridges to Peace Project

Bridges to Peace is a multi-faceted P/CVE project implemented by Uganda Muslim Youth Development Forum & Kofi Annan Foundation with funding from the European Union.

The action will complement government’s actions to Prevent and Counter Violent Extremism and Terrorism in Uganda through broadening community awareness, vigilance and preparedness against violent extremism; strengthening the capacity of at-risk individuals and communities to work for peace; enhancing the interest and capacity of CSOs to design and implement effective P/CVE interventions; and strengthening the country’s capacity to reintegrate returning combatants.

The Bridges to Peace Project will directly contribute to 6 of the 13 pillars of the recently approved Uganda National Strategy and Action plan for Preventing/Countering Violent Extremism and Terrorism namely: Priority Area 2 on Engaging Communities; Priority Area 3 on Dialogue and Conflict Prevention; Priority Area 4 focused on Strengthening good governance, human rights, and the rule of law; Priority area 6 on Gender equality and empowerment of Women; Priority area 8 on Strategic communication; and Priority area 11 on response to violent extremism and terrorism.
It  will also contribute to a number of priority areas of the IGAD Regional P/CVE Strategy, the UN Secretary General’s Plan of Action on PVE, SDG 16, UNSCR 2250 on Youth Peace and Security, and UNSCR 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.

At the European Union level, the action builds on the Council Conclusions on EU External Action on PCVE (2020) which stresses the need to involve civil society organizations in countering terrorism and preventing violent extremism, and recommends a whole-of-society approach including consistent outreach to vulnerable populations.

It also aligns with the specific objective 2 of the Multiannual Indicative Programme for Sub-Saharan countries and fits within priority 2 of the Thematic Multiannual Indicative Programme for Peace, Stability and Conflict Prevention by encouraging civic engagement for peace, promoting conflict prevention and building capacity in leading dialogue processes.
