UMYDF is governed by the Non-Government Organisations Act (2016), and is registered by the National Bureau for Non-Government Organisations, Registration Number 3939.

In line with the NGO Act, the organisation also separately holds a permit to operate from the National Bureau for Non-Government Organisations with Permit Number 7395.

The organisation was incorporated in November, 2011 by the Uganda Registration Services Bureau.
